Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual vines.

Stems: Stems slender and herbaceous, glabrous to sparsely pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to suborbicular, 3(–7) lobed, 2–15 cm long. Apex acute to acuminate. Base cordate. Surfaces glabrous or very sparsely pubescent. Margins entire or dentate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers few to several in cymes or solitary, pedicels 5–7 mm long or sometimes longer, bracts scale-like to foliose. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx of 5 sepals, distinct, imbricate, herbaceous to subcoriaceous, equal or unequal, oblong to elliptic, 1.5–3 mm long, glabrous, apex obtuse or truncate, outer 2 sepals with a subterminal bristle 1.6–6 mm long, often somewhat enlarging in fruit but not markedly accrescent, persistent, occasionally accrescent. Corolla of 5 fused petals; petals red to reddish yellow, often yellow in the throat, salverform, 2.5–4.5 cm long, the tube 0.1–0.2 cm in diameter, the limb 1.8–2.5 cm in diameter. capsules subglobose, 0.6–0.8 cm long. Stamens 5, distinct; included or rarely exserted; filaments filiform, inserted on corolla tube base alternate with corolla lobes, often triangular–dilate at base, usually unequal in length; anthers dithecal, usually linear or oblong, extrorse. Ovary superior, 2–4-carpellate, usually with as many cells, placentation basal or basal-axile; ovules 2(4, 6) per cell, or ovary 1-celled and ovules 4, these erect, anatropous, glabrous or pubescent; stigma globose or 2–3-lobed, the lobes globose; style 1, simple, filiform, included or rarely exserted.

Fruit: Fruit a subglobose capsules; 0.6-0.8 cm long; dehiscent by 4 valves or rarely 6 valves; or splitting irregularly. Seeds 1-4; rarely 6; dark brown or black; pyriform; dorsal surface with usually 2 lines of short dark hairs; endosperm absent or scanty; cartilaginous; cotyledons usually foliaceous.

Ploidy: 2n = 28; 30.

Habitat: Naturalized in disturbed sites; at least along the road.
